As the Edo State governorship election approaches on Saturday, September 21, 2024, the International Press Centre (IPC) has advised journalists, security operatives, and stakeholders to prioritise safety.
In a press statement signed by IPC’s Press Freedom Officer, Melody Akinjiyan, the organisation urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to ensure that accredited journalists are protected during the election process.
The IPC’s Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, emphasised the importance of this call due to the rising trend of attacks on journalists during elections.
He noted that journalists are frequently targeted by political actors and other electoral participants. “It is critical for journalists covering the Edo State election to be safety conscious and avoid situations that could endanger them,” Arogundade stated.
In a bid to promote safety, Arogundade advised journalists to take several precautions, including remaining non-partisan, avoiding solo movement, ensuring they are INEC-accredited, and covering violent incidents from a safe distance. “Be brave, smart, and handle classified information appropriately,” he added.
He also called on security agencies to perform their duties professionally, urging the Inspector General of Police to ensure that field officers safeguard journalists.
“The media is a critical part of the electoral process, and journalists should be granted the necessary rights and privileges to carry out their duties,” Arogundade stressed.
In addition, IPC has set up safety alert officers whom journalists can contact if they face threats or attacks during the election.
The Centre also encouraged election observers and other stakeholders to provide timely information to journalists to ensure a successful election.
