Electoral Act: FG reveals next step after Senate’s rejection of Buhari’s request

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that it is poised to explore all options available in respect of the Electoral Act 2022, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

The Executive said it is weighing its options on the Senate’s refusal to consider the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to delete section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act.

Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) made this disclosure after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Senate’s refusal last Tuesday to revoke the restriction of political appointees from participating in party conventions or congresses for the election of candidates has been trailed by mixed reactions.

While some stakeholders consider it as a radical legislative approach to rid the country of an anomaly capable of truncating democracy, others view it as a display of selfish motive by parliamentarians under the guise of improving the country’s electoral system.

Malami said the government has three options: seek a reconsideration, approach the court, or accept the law as it is.

According to him, the government is yet to take a definite position regarding its next step.
