Edo election: Group cautions Oshiomhole over tribal rhetoric ahead of guber poll

A pro-democracy group, Edo People For Good Governance, has called for an end to the political manipulation and exploitation by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole ahead of the Edo state governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

The group in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its coordinator, Comrade Bright Omorodion, accused Oshiomhole of using tribalism to maintain his political dominance and undermine the unity of Edo State.

The youth group also asserted that Oshiomhole has consistently used the Owan and Akoko Edo tribes for personal and political gain in Edo North senatorial district.

According to the statement, despite his claims of advocating for Edo North, Oshiomhole’s actions have largely benefited his Etsako tribe, which comprises only 9% of Edo State’s population.

”Since entering Edo State politics in 2008, Oshiomhole has leveraged his Etsako tribe to suppress other tribes.

”Federal appointments and political positions that should benefit all of Edo State have been monopolized by Etsako, leaving Owan and Akoko Edo tribes, as well as others, marginalized.

”Nearly all federal appointments to Edo State since 2015 have been allocated to Etsako individuals due to Oshiomhole’s influence.

”Positions such as Federal Minister, EFCC Secretary, and Police Service Commission slots are being dominated by members of his tribe, which has led to significant imbalances in political representation and resources,” the group stated.

The group also berated Oshiomhole’s recent actions, including his controversial interview on ARISE TV where he disparaged the ongoing hunger protests and labelled the organizers as faceless mobs.

”The former labour leader, who once championed protests, seems to have disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians and using any means to retain power,” the group stated.

The group further urged the people of Edo North to reject tribal manipulation and demand fair representation.

They also called for an end to the deceitful tactics employed by Oshiomhole and advocated for transparency and honesty in political leadership.
