Edo Varsity Sacks 13 Over Extortion, Sexual Harassment

The management of Edo state-owned Ambrose Ali University (AAU), has dismissed 13 of its academic and non-academic staff.

Politics Nigeria reports that the affected staff were sacked on alleged offences ranging from falsified age, fraud, misconduct, extortion and sexual harassment.

The vice chancellor made this known while presenting the committee’s report to members of AAU Special Intervention Team (SIT) Monday.

Prof. Asomwan Sunny Adagbonyin, the Vice chancellor of the university said the decision to terminate the appointment of the erring staff was reached following the recommendations of the institution’s disciplinary committee which find them guilty of the offences.

The VC added that the disciplinary committee had given the affected staff fair hearing and recommended that “the criminal aspect of the disengage staff offence should be reported to security operatives.”

He said that a lecturer and an associate professor were dismissed for collecting unapproved levy from students.

Prof. Adagbonyin said the lecturer who was the head of nursing science was recommended for sack after he was found guilty of extorting students of N32,000 and N52,000 respectively.

Others are from Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing Department, Engineering Department, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Political Science, as well as the former Director of the university’s farm.

The VC stated that a lecturer who was indicted for sexual harassment was also dismissed.

“The lecturer had claimed to have only make advances, but he went to the said girl’s church to plead for forgiveness.” he said.

“Out of the 209 disciplinary cases received, the USDC has concluded 132 while 77 cases representing were pending,” he added.

“The victims were protected and reassigned to another lecturer.”
