Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has come under fire after distributing 102 transformers to 435 communities across Ogun State as a birthday gift.
The move, which was part of his 56th birthday celebration, has triggered public outrage and calls for investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
A civic technology group, MonITNG, accused the senator of misleading the public by claiming that the transformers were personally funded.
The group alleged that the projects were actually financed through federal government allocations captured in the 2024 and 2025 national budgets.
According to the group, the transformers were listed under two federal projects — one valued at ₦125 million and another at ₦200 million — both targeted at supplying and installing 500KVA transformers in communities across Ogun East Senatorial District.
MonITNG stated that the initiative was not a private empowerment effort as portrayed by the senator and his team, but a government-funded constituency project financed with taxpayers’ money.
The group expressed concern that such government-sponsored projects were being branded as personal achievements to gain political favour ahead of the 2027 elections.
“It is therefore misleading to present these public projects as personal birthday gifts or private interventions,” the group said, warning that such actions could undermine transparency and public accountability.
The civic group also questioned the competence of some government agencies reportedly involved in executing the projects, such as the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) and the National Productivity Centre, which they said lack the technical capacity to handle power-related infrastructure.
They urged the EFCC and ICPC to thoroughly investigate the source of funding, procurement process, and actual execution of the transformer projects.
“Public office should serve the people, not personal political ambitions. Transparency and accountability must remain the foundation of true leadership,” the statement added.
However, Senator Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, has often been in the spotlight for his constituency projects and political influence in the state.
