The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialEFCC, with 2.2 million followers, has suddenly vanished from the platform.
The disappearance comes shortly after suspected internet fraudsters threatened cyber warfare against the anti-graft agency following its intensified crackdown on online fraud.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s chief spokesman, attributed the handle’s absence to a network problem, assuring that the agency’s ICT department is actively working to resolve the issue, which has persisted for three days.
“Our ICT department is working on it. They have been on it for almost three days now. We are hoping It will come up again,” Oyewale told The Gazette.
The disappearance has raised concerns about potential sabotage or sanctions from X, though the exact cause remains unclear.
The incident has sparked further controversy around the EFCC’s aggressive tactics in combating online fraud, which have been criticized by rights advocates for allegedly violating citizens’ fundamental rights.
