Despite obvious intimidation, Tinubu says 2023 election “free and fair”

The president-elect of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday said the 2023 election that crowned him as the successor to President Muhammadu Buhari was “free and fair”.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Tinubu stated this amidst voter intimidation recorded in Lagos, Anambra, and Imo during last Saturday’s general election. The Labour Party, specifically, had complained about intimidation, especially in critical states such as Lagos and Rivers.

Tinubu, a 70-year-old former governor of Lagos State was declared the president-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday morning after he polled 8,794,726 votes to win the 2023 presidential election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the APC candidate as the winner at the National Collation Centre, Abuja.

Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat fellow contenders – Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 6,984,520 votes, Labour Party’s Peter Obi had 6,101,533 votes to come third and the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Rabiu Kwankwaso with 1,496,687 votes.

“We commend INEC for running a free and fair election. The lapses that did occur were relatively few in number and were immaterial to the final outcome.

“With each cycle of elections, we steadily perfect this process so vital to our democratic life,” Tinubu said in a victory speech.
