Sonia Ekweremadu, daughter of the former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has spoken out regarding her parents’ recent jail sentences handed down by UK authorities and the family’s next move.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that in an interview with BBC News, Sonia acknowledged the conviction but disagreed with the judgement.
She admitted to having a biased perspective as their daughter.
She said: “I understand the conviction, however, I personally disagree with it.
“However that is from a bias perspective as their daughter, I will obviously always back my parents”.
Sonia denied any involvement in securing a kidney donor for her medical condition, Nephrotic Syndrome. She stated that her parents took care of everything regarding the medical aspect of her ailment.
Currently, she is undergoing dialysis.
Regarding the future, Sonia stated that the family needs to move on now that the law has taken its course.
“However, the law has taken its course, we just need to move on as one family,” she said.
This newspaper earlier reported that Senator Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were sentenced to jail for conspiring to bring a market trader to Britain from Lagos to provide an organ for Sonia.
Sonia was however cleared of the same charge.
The renounced Senator received a sentence of nine years and eight months, his wife received four years and six months, while Dr. Obeta was sentenced to 10 years.
