Elder statesman warns Atiku, El-Rufai, Obi against divisive politics ahead of 2027 polls

Elder statesman Adesunbo Onitiri has cautioned former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Anambra governor Peter Obi against engaging in actions capable of destabilising Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday, Onitiri urged the trio to exercise restraint and patriotism in their political engagements.

He said raising tensions through divisive rhetoric could endanger the country’s democratic stability.

“As one of the original democrats who risked our lives during the 1993–1994 struggle against military rule, we cannot sit idly by while some politicians create openings for anti-democratic forces to exploit,” he said.

Onitiri emphasised the need for unity in the face of Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security challenges.

He said the moment called for collaboration across party lines, not political bickering.

He called on both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition to put aside partisanship and prioritise national interest.

“The Federal Government is making efforts to address the inherited economic and security issues since taking office in 2023. What is needed now is cooperation, not division,” he said.

Onitiri also criticised Atiku’s reported legal move to disqualify President Bola Tinubu in a U.S. court ahead of the 2027 elections.

He described the attempt as unnecessary and unacceptable to most Nigerians.
