DSS to Finally Charge Emefiele to Court, Opts against Release on Bail

The Department of State Services (DSS) is set to charge the embattled governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to court soon.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this comes after Justice H. Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama ordered the state service to charge Emefiele to court within seven days or release him from its detention facility.

The DSS had arrested Emefiele on June 16 on suspicion of criminal breach of trust, incitement to violence, criminal misappropriation of public funds, economic sabotage, and economic crimes of national security dimensions.

The DSS had argued that it needed more time to conclude its investigation, but the court ruled that Emefiele could not be kept in detention without a formal charge.

A reliable source familiar with developments at the DSS said that Emefiele would be charged soon.

Emefiele’s arraignment will align with the DSS’ allegations against him, the Whistler Newspaper quoted the source as saying.

Emefiele was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 to enable investigation into the allegations against him.

The CBN Deputy Governor in charge of Operations, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, was subsequently directed by the president to step in an acting capacity.

Emefiele has been in detention at the DSS facility since his arrest.
