The House of Representatives ,on Friday, will grill officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the electronic transmission of election results.
INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu; and Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta, are to brief the lawmakers on the implication of transmitting results electronically.
The Senate had on Thursday voted after an argument broke out between lawmakers on the mode of transmission of election results.
Chairman of Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, while presenting the report of the Electoral Bill, said that “INEC may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”
Amending the clause in Gaya’s report, he Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Sabi Abdullahi said: “The Commission may consider the electronic transmission of results provided that the national coverage as adjudged by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and approved by the National Assembly.”
Senate President Ahmad Lawan then called for a vote to douse the situation.
The All Progresives Congress lawmakers in the Senate voted against the e-transmission of election results.
