Fresh attack claims 3 lives in Plateau state as fear of reprisals mount

A fresh wave of violence has struck Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, claiming the lives of three individuals in a harrowing incident on Friday.

The latest attack, occurring mere days after the Christmas Eve massacre that left over 195 people dead across Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Mangu local government areas, has sparked heightened fears of retaliatory actions.

Reports have disclosed that the victims, three youths from Angwan Hausawa in Bokkos town, ventured to Lut village to check on their relatives who sought shelter in Bokkos after a previous attack on their community.

Regrettably, they fell victim to an ambush by unidentified gunmen and were fatally shot on the spot.

Confirming the attack, Kefas Mallai, Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LG, shared the heartbreaking details of the victims’ identities.

Lurwan Ismail, Muhammadu Tuka, and Mayo, hailing from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds, had gone to rescue their loved ones—Fulanis who had fled to Bokkos town as internally displaced persons.

Tragically, their noble intentions ended in a devastating loss of life.

As of now, the bodies of the slain youths remain unclaimed, further compounding the anguish of their families and intensifying the prevailing tensions in the region.

This recent attack has only exacerbated the existing fear and apprehension among residents, who now worry about potential reprisal attacks in the wake of the escalating violence.
