The Nigeria Labour Congress has condemned the raid of its headquarters in Abuja by some security operatives on Wednesday, August 7.
In a statement issued by its Head of Media and Public Relations, Benson Upah, the NLC said some heavily armed men invade the Labour House at about 8.30 pm long after the close of work.
Ujah said the NLC condemns “this new low in security operations in Nigeria” and would not tolerate such.
His words, “If this harassment continues, the Nigeria Labour Congress will not hesitate to call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured.”
Ujah further stated that some of the operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and others wearing black tee-shirts, presumably from the State Security Services (SSS) swooped on the 10th Floor of the NLC headquarters.
According to him, the operatives arrested the congress security officer on duty and commandeered him to the second floor where he was asked to produce the keys to the offices.
Ujah added, “When he told them that he had no such keys on him, they broke into the 10th floor and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor carting away hundreds of books and other publications.
“The invading troop claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGoveranance protests.”
Noting that the act by the Police and the SSS is a new low, Ujah said the armed security operatives failed to present any legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the NLC.
