Reno Omokri, a one-time special assistant of new media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised the National Assembly (NASS) against endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to borrow from abroad.
POLITICS NIGERIA understands that Buhari is seeking the approval of the national assembly to borrow fresh sums of $4,054,476,863 and €710 million in an addendum to the 2018-2020 borrowing plan.
The president had also asked the Nigerian legislative arm to approve grant components of $125 million.
In a letter written in September, Buhari explained that owing to “emerging needs”, there is a need to raise more funds for some “critical projects”.
The president said the loans, when obtained, will stimulate the economy and create jobs.
But Buhari critic, Omokri, thinks otherwise.
“25% of the 2022 budget is devoted to debt servicing (Debt servicing means you pay the minimum interest only). Bambiala Buhari has turned Nigeria to a beggars debtor nation. I urge the NASS to fear God and reject Buhari’s plans to borrow fresh ₦6.3 trillion,” Omokri wrote on his known Twitter handle on Thursday morning.
