Ex-Reps member slams Babachir Lawal over comments on Tinubu’s Vatican visit

Israel Sunny-Goli, a former member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa State and now a traditional ruler in Brass Kingdom, has criticised Babachir Lawal, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), for his recent remarks describing President Bola Tinubu’s Vatican visit as an insult to Christianity.

Sunny-Goli, in a statement issued on Thursday, described Lawal’s comments as “misguided” and accused the former SGF of exploiting religion in a “desperate bid for political relevance.”

He said: “Tinubu’s administration continues to prioritise unity, tolerance, and coexistence, reaffirming the imperative of a harmonious Nigeria.

“Nothing illustrates his dedication to religious tolerance more than his visit to the Vatican, where he met with Pope Leo XIV during the Holy Father’s investiture.”

Lawal, during an appearance on Arise Television on May 21, had questioned the optics and intentions behind Tinubu’s presence at the Vatican ceremony.

The former lawmaker said: “His political influence remains negligible, particularly within his constituency.

“This must account for his desperation for political relevance, which he seeks like a drowning man clutching at straws.”

He urged Nigerians to look beyond divisive rhetoric and rally behind President Tinubu’s vision for national unity and inclusive governance.

“At this critical juncture in our national journey, we must reject voices that sow discord and embrace leadership that promotes unity across faiths and regions,” Sunny-Goli stated.
