Tunji Bello, a close ally of President Bola Tinubu and the current Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has shed light on why Tinubu’s success as Lagos Governor hasn’t translated into similar achievements as Nigeria’s President.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Bello highlighted the stark differences between governing Lagos and managing Nigeria’s diverse federal landscape.
Bello emphasised that “Nigeria is a different thing entirely” compared to Lagos, noting that Tinubu faces unique challenges at the federal level, including the need to navigate “Federal Character” and address widespread infrastructural and economic issues.
“What I know is that he (Tinubu) is somebody who fights for the interest of Nigerians at any point in time, just like he did when he was in Lagos,” Bello stated, adding that the expectations from his Lagos tenure must be tempered with the realities of federal governance.
Despite facing “gargantuan problems,” Bello praised Tinubu for his efforts and suggested that improvements in the economy and other areas are forthcoming. “He just spent one year… I believe that we will see a lot of changes as we move on,” he said, urging patience for another two to three years.
In a related note, Bello also addressed consumer protection, warning against profiteering and announcing penalties for exploitative practices.
He urged Nigerians to report unfair trade practices to the FCCPC to ensure accountability.
