Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has mocked the Nigeria Police Force after one of its patrol vehicles was stolen from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Sowore described the Federal Capital Territory as the “Federal Capital of Thieves.”
He said the incident exposed not only corruption in the system but also the weakness of those in charge of the nation’s security.
The missing vehicle, a Toyota Buffalo Land Cruiser, reportedly disappeared from the official parking lot of the Louis Edet House, the police headquarters, on July 28, 2025. Despite being one of the force’s operational patrol trucks, the car has not been recovered.
Sowore wondered how such a high-value vehicle could vanish without a trace. He accused the police of negligence and questioned why patrol trucks were not fitted with tracking devices that could disable the vehicle once stolen.
“The Nigerian police are so bad that car thieves can steal police cars in this country,” he said. “They didn’t steal it from a DPO’s office; they stole it from the force headquarters. It is unbelievable.”
The outspoken activist recalled past embarrassing incidents involving the police, including when officers in Kwara State once paraded a goat for alleged armed robbery. According to him, the present case only deepens public distrust in the police.
Sowore further linked the incident to what he called the corruption of Abuja’s political leadership under the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. He alleged that threats to his life have intensified because of his constant criticism of the government.
Despite the risks, Sowore vowed to continue his activism. “If it will take some of our lives to wake people up in this country, we will gladly contribute to that,” he declared.
At the time of this report, Police authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
