FG approves Oxford Malaria vaccine for use in Nigeria

Nigeria’s fight against malaria has received a significant boost as the government approves the use of R21 Malaria Vaccine (Recombinant, Adjuvanted).

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

According to Adeyeye, the approval was made in accordance with NAFDAC Act CapN1, LFN 2004. The vaccine, which is indicated for the prevention of clinical malaria in children between 5 and 36 months of age, has a recommended storage temperature of 2-8°C.

Last week, Ghana made headlines by becoming the first country in the world to approve the new malaria vaccine from Oxford University.

The country’s decision to approve R21 Malaria Vaccine demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving public health and tackling the malaria burden in the country.

Malaria remains a major public health concern in Nigeria, with over 400,000 deaths recorded annually, mainly among children under five years of age.
