The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, warned over the reoccurrence of increasing spending of the federal ministries, agencies, and parastatals that have reached over 60 per cent on Tuesday.
The secretary delivered his remarks at the 3rd National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in the Public Sector, held at the State House Conference Hall in Abuja.
“Systemic corruption prevents the government from maximizing its potential of providing good governance for the people with available little resources especially at this time of Covid-19 pandemic,” said Mr Mustapha.
The SGF finds it no longer acceptable for the country’s little resources to be spent on frivolities, fake projects and meaningless capital projects, which continues to increase since 2015.
Aside from those mentioned, the budget has been put on travel, maintenance, local and international training, welfare, office stationery/consumables, honoraria, and others.
“Recent data from the Budget Office indicates that ‘actual MDAs recurrent spending is still on the rise viz. from N3.61 trillion in 2015 to N5.26 trillion in 2018 and N7.91 trillion in 2020,” said Mr Mustapha.
According to Mr Mustapha, the federal government under President Buhari is currently working ceaselessly on cutting down the cost of governance, for more efficient utilisation.
Moreover, the FG also intends on getting back the resources that had been claimed by private pockets of those who “fraudulently orchestrate the budget process for their selfish desires”.
