The Federal Government has announced plans to begin urgent repairs on damaged expansion joints along key bridges on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, following rising concerns over safety.
Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, made the disclosure on Saturday while speaking with journalists about Friday’s accident involving an 18-seater commercial bus at Arepo bus stop. Several passengers were seriously injured in the crash, which was linked to a faulty expansion joint on the bridge.
“These bridges — particularly at Kara, Arepo, and Magboro — are starting to show visible signs of distress,” Kesha said. “What happened yesterday is a wake-up call, and we can’t afford to delay.”
She explained that while the government works on getting full approval for long-term repairs, temporary palliative measures will begin immediately to address the most pressing issues. She added that the contractor already working on the expressway has been instructed to start the repairs over the weekend.
“This is just the first step. The full rehabilitation will come, but we can’t sit back and watch more accidents happen while we wait,” she said.
Kesha didn’t mince words when speaking about the impact of vandalism on the bridges. She said some of the joint failures were not natural but were caused by deliberate acts of destruction.
“People are damaging these structures for selfish reasons, and it’s the general public that pays the price — sometimes with their lives,” she said, clearly frustrated. “We need to change this attitude. Public property is not government property; it’s our property.”
She appealed to Nigerians to take more responsibility in protecting national infrastructure and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“If we don’t stand up to protect these assets, we’ll keep going in circles. Anyone caught vandalising should face the full weight of the law,” she warned.
Kesha also expressed deep concern for the victims of Friday’s crash and apologized for the inconvenience many road users have faced due to the deteriorating conditions of the bridges.
“We’re working as fast as we can. It’s not ideal, but we’re committed to making our roads safer — and we can’t do it alone. Public support is critical,” she said.
