FG Provides Update on Simon Ekpa’s Extradition from Finland

The Federal Government has given an update on efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian citizen and former city councillor in Finland, to face charges in Nigeria.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made this known during a special event on Thursday. The session was held to inform Nigerians and other stakeholders about the progress made by the Federal Ministry of Justice in handling criminal justice matters since October 2024.

When asked about Simon Ekpa, the Justice Minister explained that Ekpa is currently under investigation in Finland for suspected terrorist activities. He said Nigeria is already working with Finnish authorities to bring him back for trial.

“He committed an offence against the Finnish government as well as in Nigeria. His extradition will come at the right time,” Fagbemi stated.

Ekpa was first arrested in Finland in November 2024, along with four others who were later released. His case is now with Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General, who will decide if charges will be filed against him there.

The Minister also shared that Nigeria has successfully extradited two other suspects to the United States—Hassan Bun Hussein Abolore Lawal in January 2025 and Okechukwu Josiah Odunna in March 2025.

In addition, Fagbemi said the government is working with Qatar to extradite Benjamin Nnanyereugo, also known as Killaboi. He is wanted in Nigeria for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Augusta, and is expected to be returned from Qatar in April 2025 to face murder charges.
