The Federal Government has warned Nigerians living in frontline states that they may experience flooding within the next seven days.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the warning came after the Cameroonian authorities confirmed that they have opened the floodgates of the Lagdo Dam.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, urged state governments to step up their preparedness and ensure the immediate evacuation of people from flood-prone areas.
She also said that the ministry is ready to work with subnational and local governments to provide shelters for the affected people.
The Minister of Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, said that the ministry has activated hourly flood warning alerts across the country and has designed a platform to provide regular and real-time information to environmental correspondents.
He also said that the ministry is working with Cameroonian authorities to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
On his part, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, urged Nigerians to take steps to clear drainages and said that the ministry is working to construct dams and dredge rivers to prevent future flooding.
The Presidential Committee also assured Nigerians that they will provide necessary medical support to those affected by the flooding.
The committee called on all Nigerians to be vigilant and to take precautions to protect themselves and their property from flooding.
