In the past week, Nigeria’s Ministry of Education raised concerns over the proliferation of fake certificates from countries like Togo and the Republic of Benin.
According to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, over 22,000 certificates in Nigeria from these countries were fake.
However, in a swift move, Mamman while speaking on Channels Television, Sunday Politics programme said that only eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic have been accredited to award degrees to Nigerians.
According to the Minister, this decision was part of a report submitted to the Federal Executive Council by a committee mandated to probe the issuance of certificates and its racketeering by foreign and local institutions.
The minister also said that currently, the Federal Government only recognises three institutions in Togo and five in the Republic of Benin.
