Fire razed through Gwarzo market on Monday night, burning down 22 shops.
This led to millions of naira in losses for the affected traders. The inferno, which started around midnight, raged through the market until early morning before firefighters finally brought it under control.
“The fire started at midnight and it took the state fire service personnel until Monday morning to put it out,” Rabiu Khalil, Zonal Information Officer for Gwarzo Local Government Area, confirmed. Khalil further stated that no casualties were reported.
One affected trader, Dayyabu Lawan Bala, said the fire has caused them immense hardship. “I lost goods worth over N5 million in my shop to this unfortunate fire incident,” he said. “I appeal to the state government to come to our rescue.”
Representative Abdullahi Muazu Babangandu of Gwarzo Federal Constituency visited the scene of the devastation and offered immediate relief to the affected traders. He donated N500,000.
The Kano State Fire Service, who also confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer Saminu Abdullahi, said although 22 shops were affected, two were still under construction.
