Fire outbreaks in three different states across the country have destroyed property and shops worth billions of naira.
Politics Nigeria gathered that the fire incident razed down a market, shops and lounge in Taraba, Kwara and Yobe states leaving owners devasted.
In Yobe State, at least 200 people reportedly lost their property in the inferior that destroyed 46 shops in Bayan Tasha market of Damaturu.
The fire, according to residents, started at about 2.30am but had already gone wild before the state fire personnel arrived.
Confirming the incident, Yobe State’s deputy governor, Idi Barde said the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
Similarly, an incident at the Ita Amodu market, Old Yidi road in Ilorin, Kwara State led to the destruction of property worth millions.
The fire at the Kwara market affected mostly those dealing with mattresses, carpets, gum and other materials.
Hassan Adekunle, the state’s police spokesperson said the fire originated from a lorry overloaded with mattresses when they arrived the state.
He added that the lorry collided with a high-tension wire which caused a spark.
“The fire destroyed the lorry and spread to a nearby building containing 47 rooms and 19 shops.
“Despite the intensity of the blaze, our swift efforts to contain it prevent further destruction. 12 shops and 31 rooms were saved while 7 shops and 16 rooms were unfortunately affected,” he stated.
Same goes to Taraba state where billions of naira worth of property were lost at the Duchess Lounge located opposite Jolly Nyame Stadium Jalingo.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, eyewitnesses said it may have started as a result of sudden power surge worsened by the harmattan wind.
