Focus on governance, not political coalitions – SDP presidential candidate tells Tinubu

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize governance and address growing public discontent rather than concern himself with political coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking with journalists, Adebayo said Nigerians are facing severe economic challenges and need responsive leadership, not political manoeuvring.

He warned that the rising resentment against the Tinubu administration should be of greater concern than any opposition alliance.

His words: “The president is politically savvy enough to know that the coalition is not his problem.

“What Nigerians have under Tinubu is not an administration, but a presidency focused on 2027.”

The SDP chieftain criticized the Tinubu administration for what he described as a failure to produce workable national budgets.

According to him, neither the 2023 nor the 2024 budget has offered meaningful solutions to Nigeria’s economic woes.

He said: “The last budget was worse than the first. They have failed to get a grip on anything. Two years in, and we still don’t have a functional budget that reflects the needs of the people.”

He also expressed strong reservations about the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, arguing that a more sustainable approach would be to reduce the cost of education rather than offer loans that may be inaccessible or burdensome for many families.

“An administration should be politically sensitive in making decisions. Unfortunately, this government has not shown any real preparedness to solve the people’s problems,” Adebayo said.

Despite his criticisms, Adebayo commended President Tinubu for visiting Katsina State to engage with troops fighting insurgency in the region.

He said: “The president’s visit to Katsina as Commander-in-Chief gladdened my heart.

“On a day he could have spent in political scheming, he instead chose to meet with our service chiefs and troops. That is commendable and must be followed up with real support.”
