Chief John Oyegun, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo state.
Oyegun received his ADC membership card on Tuesday at the party’s secretariat in Benin, the state capital, from Kennedy Odion, the state chairman of the party.
Speaking at the ceremony, Odion described Oyegun as a coalition builder, adding that the former APC chairman is once again playing a vital role in rescuing the country.
Odion said: “He has put together what is called a coalition before, and he succeeded.
“So, in mathematics, once you understand the formula, the answer is in view. He understands how he did it before, so doing it again is not a difficult task.
“As God may have it, he is not from any other state but from the heartbeat of this nation, Edo State, and we are moving the coalition together.
“He was the chairman of the implementation committee that decided that ADC would be the platform.”
In his remarks, Oyegun said the group considered several parties before choosing ADC as the most credible vehicle to drive their rescue mission.
His words: “We talked to a lot of parties, about seven. Up till the very last minute.
“We made a report and said ADC. And some said, ‘No, no, no, you must still talk to this, you must still talk to that.’
“So, we delayed the decision for another fortnight. At the end of our meeting, we still came back. I said, ‘Yes, what you ask us to do, we’ve done. We’ve talked to the others, but we have not seen a party as dedicated as the ADC.’”
Oyegun blamed the APC for the economic hardship and rising insecurity in the country.,
He said the nation has never been as divided as it is under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He dismissed rumours that the coalition within ADC was plotting to destabilise the government, saying such claims were aimed at discrediting the party’s mission.
He stated: “The ADC is growing by the day, and other notable politicians are still coming to join us soon.
“So, from a month ago, you were just ADC. Today, one can say we are the largest party in this nation.
“It’s still ADC, but ADC is now a mix of the best of the PDP and the APC. More are still coming on the way.”
