Amid the rejection of the old naira notes by some traders and businesses, a former National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muiz Banire, has criticised some Nigerian governors for ‘persecuting innocent citizens’.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the Kano State government on Sunday shut down a popular supermarket WellCare.
Baffa Babba Danagundi, the Acting Chairman of the state Consumer Protection Council, said the closure followed the refusal of the supermarket to accept the old naira notes from customers – contrary to the directive of the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Similarly, in Zamfara, Bello Matawalle, governor of the state, said residents rejecting the old N200, N500 and N1000 naira notes should be arrested.
What manner of Governors do we have in Nigeria? Rather than moving against the central bank governor that has not reversed the bank’s position on the old notes, it is the innocent citizens who are compliant that are being persecuted.

Reacting to these developments, Banire wrote on his known Twitter handle on Sunday night: “What manner of Governors do we have in Nigeria? Rather than moving against the central bank governor that has not reversed the bank’s position on the old notes, it is the innocent citizens who are compliant that are being persecuted.
“How is an average Nigerian to know, much less understand the import of the Supreme Court ruling? If only these characters are normal, is it not the CBN Governor they should be pursuing to express clarity to the people! Are they average of their shadows also, compromise?
“Why threatening innocent citizens with arrests and shutting their businesses? This is wickedness at its peak. You are simply kicking a dead dog and God will visit His wrath on the wicked.”
