Former minister hails JAMB for owning up to exam failure

Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for taking responsibility for the technical failures that disrupted the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in several states.

Chidoka, in a statement posted on Tuesday, praised JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, for offering what he described as an “emotional and heartfelt apology” to the nation after system failures affected examinations in 157 centres across Lagos and the five Southeastern states.

A total of 379,997 candidates, out of the 1.9 million who registered, were impacted by the disruption.

JAMB has since announced that the affected candidates will be given another chance to sit for the examination between Friday, May 16, and Monday, May 19, 2025.

The decision, Chidoka noted, was reached in consultation with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which is currently conducting its own school-leaving examinations.

“JAMB did not resort to the all-too-familiar refrain of ‘Go to court.’ Instead, it acknowledged its shortcomings, invited critical stakeholders for dialogue, and subjected its internal processes to external review,” Chidoka wrote.

He added that the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, where he serves as founder, will continue to use data and evidence to hold public institutions accountable and spotlight governance failures and successes.

To the affected students, he offered words of encouragement: “You are not alone.”
