Fresh plot to impeach Akpabio thickens

There are strong indications that some aggrieved lawmakers at the upper legislative chamber have initiated fresh moves to impeach Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

This comes after Senator Abdul Ningi received a 3-month suspension for expressing concerns over the insertion of N3.7 trillion allegedly not attached to any project into the 2024 budget.

But speaking on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Majority Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, revealed that some senators were making efforts to impeach Akpabio as President of the Senate.

Bamidele likened Ningi’s action to a failed civilian coup.

His words: “I thank members of the Northern Senators Forum who have debunked Ningi’s claim. Over 60 senators voted for Akpabio and over 40 voted against. Some among those who voted against Akpabio had moved on and agreed to work with Akpabio. Some did not.

“Why are all these controversies always about Akpabio? A few people want to do everything possible to remove you (Akpabio) from that seat. The last time the South South had the chance to be Senate President was over 40 years ago.

“Senators Ahmad Lawan and David Mark had peaceful tenures as Senate President. Even Senator Bukola Saraki with all he did served out his tenure.

“Why are these controversies all about Akpabio? Senator Ningi wants to use the name of Northern Senators Forum against Akpabio,” he announced.

Politics Nigeria recalls that this is the second time lawmakers at the red chamber will be making an attempt at unseating Akpabio from his his position.
