The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists in Badagry, Lagos State, against distracted driving during the ember months and beyond. The Unit Commander of the FRSC in Badagry, Mr. Yusuf Sanni, gave the warning on Wednesday while flagging off the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign.

The event, monitored by Politics Nigeria, was themed “Take Responsibility For Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving.”

According to Sanni, this year’s campaign is directed at drivers who frequently engage in phone use or unnecessary conversations while behind the wheel.

“The theme emphasises the critical role of human behaviour in road safety. Most crashes are caused by driver-related factors such as speeding, fatigue, overloading, and the use of mobile phones while driving,” Sanni said.

He explained that while the 2024 campaign urged passengers to “speak up” when drivers acted recklessly, the 2025 focus is on making drivers more accountable for their actions.

“This year, drivers should take responsibility for driving safely to their destinations,” he stated.

Sanni further revealed that the campaign would tackle recurring offences including reckless driving, alcohol consumption, non-use of seat belts, and other unsafe practices.

He added that the FRSC would intensify its enforcement strategy by deploying more personnel along highways and introducing community-driven approaches such as rallies, town hall meetings, and free vehicle safety checks.

The commander also highlighted the Corps’ collaboration with driving schools, transport unions, and community leaders to enhance driver education and awareness.

“We are working closely with key stakeholders to strengthen our collective effort toward safer roads,” he said.

He appealed to motorists to always maintain speed limits and comply with all traffic regulations.

During the flag-off, FRSC personnel and Special Marshals, alongside transport union members and residents, marched from the command office to Badagry Roundabout and motor parks, sensitising road users on the need to drive responsibly throughout the festive period.
