Youths from Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State have taken over the council secretariat, declaring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the only authority they recognize.
Recall that the outgoing chairman of the local government area, Obarilomate Ollor, had warned those eager to throw him out of office not to come close to the council, saying they will be resisted
However, on Tuesday, hundreds of youths marched around the council premises, vowing to protect the council’s interests and ensure the governor’s directive is obeyed.
“We have taken over Eleme. Total takeover. The governor is the power we know, there is no other power,” a youth said.
The political crisis in the state follows a court ruling recognizing a three-man House of Assembly, which annuled the tenure extension granted by the 27-member Assembly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike.
