*What is known so far about Unknown Gunmen*
The gunmen are believed to be behind the frequent attacks in the South-east often targeting security agencies, government facilities, cattle and non-natives in the region.
The gunmen, reportedly part of the Biafra agitation, have repeatedly expressed distaste with election activities in the South-east.
They have been attacking Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials in the region and often refer to South-east and some parts of the South-south Nigeria as “Biafraland.”
The federal government has accused the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the South-east. But the group, led by detained Nnamdi Kanu, has repeatedly denied their involvement in the attacks.
The separatist group is leading agitation for an independent state of Biafra to be carved out from the South-east and some parts of the South-south Nigeria.
