Ghana to Play Football in Nigeria, Eyes 30,000-Capacity Akwa Ibom Stadium

The Ghana national football team, the Black Stars, are likely to play their remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations home qualifiers in Nigeria.

POLITICS NIGERIA learnt that the team is also considering making use of the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, The Akwa Ibom State capital.

The development comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected their home venue, the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, due to major structural concerns.

The CAF inspection team deemed the stadium unsuitable for competitive matches, citing several issues such as poor drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and uneven grass cover.

The decision has left Ghana with no approved stadium for their upcoming qualifiers, forcing them to seek alternative venues outside the country.

If the Ghanaian team eventually chooses to use the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, it will mean the stadium will play host to two men’s national football teams. Notedly, it currently serves as the home ground for Nigeria’s Super Eagles and meets CAF’s standards.

Other stadiums under consideration by the Ghanaian authorities include Côte d’Ivoire’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Stade de la Paix, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium in Douala, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco.

However, it is understood that the Akwa Ibom Stadium remains the top choice due to its proximity and suitability.
