Ghanaian authorities have arrested 25 Nigerian nationals suspected of running an international cybercrime syndicate following a coordinated raid on a hideout in Dodowa, Greater Accra Region.
The operation, carried out recently, was the result of weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance led by a 12-member tactical police unit, the Cybercrime Unit’s director of operations, and senior officials from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA).
Over 40 laptops and 25 mobile phones were seized during the sting, with investigators describing the devices as critical tools used in orchestrating online scams targeting both local and foreign victims.
The raid was triggered by a distress report submitted to the Computer Emergency Response Team-Ghana (CERT-GH) by a Nigerian national who claimed he had been kidnapped and forced into cybercrime activity.
Acting swiftly, CSA officials contacted the whistleblower’s mother in Nigeria to confirm his identity.
Investigations later revealed that the young man had been declared missing in Nigeria, and his account helped expose nearly 20 others who were being held against their will and coerced into fraudulent activities.
“This operation underscores Ghana’s zero-tolerance policy on transnational cybercrime and our firm resolve to protect individuals—both Ghanaians and foreign nationals—who are exploited by criminal enterprises,” a senior CSA official said.
All 25 suspects are currently in police custody. Digital forensic analysis is underway on the seized equipment to determine the full scope of the operation and establish links to global fraud networks.
Authorities believe the syndicate used phishing, social engineering, and other deceptive tactics to defraud victims worldwide.
The CSA, in a follow-up statement, reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led operations and stronger cross-border collaboration to protect Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
“We will continue to pursue proactive strategies to dismantle cybercriminal networks and ensure public trust in Ghana’s digital space,” the statement read.
