Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has banned scavenging activities in Borno State.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this follows an on-site assessment of the discovery of a large quantity of metal scraps, believed to be parts of government property.
During his tour of various project sites, the governor came across substantial amounts of metal scraps, including items believed to belong to federal authorities and the Borno State Government, NTA reports.
In an interview, Governor Zulum highlighted the severe consequences of metal scavenging, noting that over the past few years, approximately a thousand people have lost their lives in the state due to this dangerous practice. He expressed concerns that some individuals involved in scavenging go to extreme lengths, including stealing public property such as street light poles and telecommunication company tanks.
The governor also revealed that some vehicles belonging to local governments have been destroyed by those engaged in scavenging activities. He emphasized that such nefarious activities cannot be allowed to continue unchecked.
To bring order to business activities and ensure the safety of the scavengers themselves, Governor Zulum announced a ban on scavenging activities across all twenty-seven local government areas in the state.
