Govt Responsible for Rot in Police, Professor of Criminology Alleges

The Nigerian government has been accused of being the major cause of the rot in the Nigeria Police Force by Etannibi Alemika, a Professor of Criminology and Sociology of Law.

Alemika urged Nigerians to desist from blaming officers of the Nigerian Police for some of the professional misconduct witnessed among personnel/

Speaking at a two-day citizen’s engagement Workshop on police reform in Ibadan, Alemika said the police as an organisation is a dependent variable.

At the workshop organised with support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and German Agency for Development and attended by members of the Civil Society Organisation, media and security operatives, Alemika added that the Police and its personnel are agents of the state which cannot function on their own

He said, “What you see in the police is a reflection of the quality of government. The government is the principal while the police are the agents.

“You are not going to have better policing unless you have good governance. Police are reflecting national ethos,” Alemika noted.
