The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a warning against the move to distort both historical and legal facts on the traditional legal crisis rocking the Warri kingdoms in Delta State.
Emmanuel Onwubiko, the national coordinator of HURIWA in a statement issued on Saturday described the move to extend Olu of Warri’s authority over other Ijaw territories as provocative and unlawful.
HURIWA called parties involved to ensure they rely on existing legal frameworks and historical facts to ascertain the traditional monarch’s level of authority.
According to Onwubiko, laws have prescribed that Olu of Warri has authority only over the Itsekiri land and not the kingdoms of Gbaramatu, Egbeoma, Isaba, and Ogbe-Ijoh which are all autonomous.
He said the listed Ijaw kingdoms are ruled by their traditional leaders as provided by the law.
“We stand with the Indigenous People of Ijaw in Delta State in their call for mutual respect, legal clarity, and the upholding of traditional boundaries.
“The Olu of Warri, originally the Olu of Itsekiri, must operate within the confines of his jurisdiction as defined by law,” Onwubiko said.
He also called on the state government and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that legal boundaries are established for the good of all the people of Delta State.
