Gunfire heard in Sudan despite attempt at ceasefire

A ceasefire appears to be holding in Sudan, despite reports of new gunfire and shelling.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this is the fourth attempt to end the fighting that began on April 15th, despite previous truces not being observed.

This latest truce between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). became possible after 48 hours of negotiations. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the 72-hour truce on Monday.

The cease-fire attempt began at midnight on Monday.

There have also been reports of warplanes flying over Khartoum, but civilians have returned to the capital’s streets.

Both sides have confirmed they will cease hostilities.

However Tagreed Abdin, who lives 7km from the centre of Khartoum, said she could hear shelling from her home on Tuesday morning despite the agreement, reports the BBC.

“The situation right now is that this morning there was shelling and gunfire,” she told the BBC.

“Obviously the ceasefire hasn’t taken,” she added.

At least 459 people have died in the conflict so far, though the actual number is thought to be much higher.
