An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been killed by some gunmen in the Igbomotoru community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The officer was reportedly killed after the gunmen suspected to be militants laid an ambush for operatives of the corps on Friday.
Sources within the community said the NSCDC team were returning from an operation aimed at clamping down on illegal hunkering in the area when the incident occurred.
It was gathered that the deceased officer was shot at close range during a gun duel between the operatives and the militants who used high-calibre weapons to overpower the security team.
Other officers who were injured in the battle were said to have been taken to a medical facility in Yenoga for treatment.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson in Bayelsa, Solomon Ogbere said a comprehensive report has not been received by the command on gun battle.
Ogbere told Daily Trust, “The information, sincerely speaking, we’ve gotten it but I’m still waiting for the OC to give me a comprehensive report, but you are not actually far from the truth anyway, but I can’t actually speak on it because I have not gotten the exact details but by tomorrow (Monday), I will be speaking on good authority by telling you that this is what actually transpired and this is casualty rate and this is what happened.”
