Gunmen kill two policemen in another Abia state checkpoint attack [VIDEO]

Unknown gunmen on Friday killed two policemen and injured another at a checkpoint located at the popular Opobo Junction along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway.

The officers were conducting a routine evening stop-and-search operation when the assailants struck.

Shortly after the incident, multiple police patrol teams arrived at the scene, causing panic among residents who fled the area.

According to an eyewitness, the attackers, numbering six, arrived in a Sienna sport utility vehicle.

The sudden violence led to chaos, with shop owners along the road and traders at Ehere market hastily closing their businesses and abandoning their goods to seek safety.

This incident has raised concerns among residents, coming on the heels of a similar attack on May 30 in which gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint at Obikabia Junction in Aba, also in Abia State.

The assailants, enforcing a sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to mark Biafra Day, were seen wearing black outfits and firing shots indiscriminately. They also set fire to a military patrol truck.

”First it was the killing of soldiers at Obikabia junction, Ehere, Ogbor Hill. Today it is Police officers being killed at Opobo junction same Ogbor hill, what is really going on at Ogbor Hill Aba. People have ran away from their homes in fear of retribution by Police,” a social media user, Ike Nmeri wrote on X.

Uchechukwu Igbojionu wrote: ”Whatever is happening in Aba looks to be political. Today in the evening, a police officer was gunned down in Ogbor-hill. 30 mins later, the army barricaded the whole area from Azuka to Opobo. Many trekked home from Bata to Opobo junction and beyond.”
