Heavy gunshots as Civil Defence operatives repel armed attack at Lafia command

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives in Nasarawa have repelled an attempted attack on its state command in Lafia by suspected bandits.

State public relations officer of the NSCDC, Jerry Victor, confirmed the incident to journalists on Monday.

Victor noted that an unspecified number of gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded the headquarters of the corps in the early hours of Monday.

He noted that the gunmen, who came in large numbers with iron rods, attempted to break some parts of the command’s fence to gain entry into the facility, while others took up different positions around the building.

Victor explained that operatives of the NSCDC swiftly responded by opening fire on the hoodlums, whose mission was to release some high-profile criminal suspects, including informants of kidnappers in the custody of the command.

The NSCDC spokesperson, who disclosed that no casualties were recorded during the gun duel with the attackers, said calm had been restored.

Mr Victor also said the command had detained five “notorious suspects” involved in various crimes, including two informants connected to the kidnapping of the 82-year-old father of former state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Daniel Umaru Lagi.

Lagi’s father was killed by his abductors even after a ransom was paid.
