Sadiq Abacha, son of the late Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha, has responded to the recent publication of Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, A Journey in Service, which has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s political history.
In his book, Babangida attributes the annulment of the 1993 presidential election to Sani Abacha, accusing him of plotting to overthrow his government.
In a Facebook post, Sadiq defended his father’s legacy, stating that Sani Abacha was a leader whose impact remains significant despite ongoing criticism.
According to him, those who portray his father negatively are motivated by envy and have aspired to emulate him in their careers.
“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit,” Sadiq wrote, adding that history would ultimately judge his father favourably.
He expressed pride in his father’s achievements and insisted that detractors could not diminish his legacy.
Sadiq’s comments came shortly after Babangida publicly expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which he acknowledged was won by Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party.
Babangida’s memoir details his experiences and decisions during his time in power, including the controversial annulment that led to significant political turmoil in Nigeria.
The former military ruler admitted that the annulment was influenced by internal forces within his administration, allegedly led by Abacha without prior knowledge.
