The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has described the observance of the Monday sit-at-home in the Southeast as a manifestation of laziness, contrary to the renowned characteristics of the Igbos.
Kalu made the remark during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) and Peace in South East Initiative (PISE-P) at the National Assembly complex.
The PISE-P initiative, spearheaded by the Deputy Speaker, aims to restore peace to the Southeast region.
In his statement, Kalu asserted that the Igbos are industrious people who are not inclined towards idleness or seeking additional holidays.
He emphasized that Southeasterners are known for multiplying wealth wherever they go and are not proponents of poverty.
“The Southeast people are visionary people who are not lazy that will choose Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to sit at home. Saturday and Sunday have always been enough for us for relaxation as a weekend,” stated Kalu.
The Deputy Speaker expressed concern that designating an additional day for a sit-at-home demonstration is a departure from the hardworking identity of the Southeast.
He highlighted the historical spirit of hard work, building, and progress as bequeathed by forefathers and ancestors.
Kalu used the platform to stress that initiatives like PISE-P serve as a reminder of the values of hard work and construction over destruction, as he urged the Southeast to embrace the spirit of building, giving birth, and fostering peace within the region.
