The House of Representatives has moved a step closer toward creating more local government areas in Benue State.
A new bill seeking constitutional amendment to this effect has passed its second reading on the floor of the Green Chamber.
The proposed legislation, tagged HB2527, was sponsored by Rep. David Ogewu, who represents the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While presenting the bill, Rep. Ogewu explained that the aim is to strengthen grassroots governance and bring government closer to the people.
He said the growing population and large size of Benue State make the creation of additional LGAs necessary for balanced development and better service delivery.
The motion received wide support in the chamber. It was seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar, representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, who described the initiative as a positive step toward improving governance in rural areas.
According to Rep. Ogewu, the bill will “enhance grassroots governance by bringing government closer to the people,” and create opportunities for more inclusive participation in local administration.
He also recalled that former Governor George Akume, during his tenure which ended in 2007, made similar attempts to expand the number of councils in Benue but did not succeed before leaving office.
With its second reading now concluded, the bill has been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration and possible public hearing.
