How civil servants sent abroad for government-sponsored training absconded – Commissioner

The Commissioner for Establishments and Training in Lagos State, Afolabi Ayantayo, has said that about 30 per cent of civil servants sent abroad for a government-sponsored training have absconded.

Ayantayo, while speaking at the 2025 ministerial briefing, said these government workers have failed to return following the completion of their training programme.

He further stated that the Lagos State government was doing its best to ensure capacity building and training of staff of its agencies.

According to the commissioner, the Lagos government consistently organises training and capacity-building workshops for its workers.

He, however, said that aside from staff absconding from training, several other State workers have left the state for better opportunities outside the country.

He said, “Over the past three years, about 8,000 staff from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were granted approval to go on study leave to improve their professional skills.”

“Additionally, from May 2022 to December 2024, a total of 23,420 staff benefited from various training interventions. In that period, over 185 training programs were held, covering multiple skill levels, leadership development, and regulatory compliance.”
