Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed sadness over the death of over 100 Nigerians in a recent flood incident in Niger State.
Authorities said that a total of 115 bodies have been recovered while over 300 houses were submerged in the flood which happened on Thursday in Mokwa community of niger State.
It was also gathered that several families have been displaced while some households had their entire members wiped out.
Reacting to the incident, Saraki said the flooding was a consequence of decades of neglect, poor planning and failure of leaders to take citizens’ vulnerability seriously.
He also said that this neglect has continued for years despite warnings from climate experts.
“How many more lives must be lost before we acknowledge that what’s happening here is not normal?
“Over a hundred lives—gone. Entire families were wiped out. More than 3,000 homes submerged. Children, elders, parents—gone,” Sarako stated.
Describing the incident as the biggest disaster Nigeria has faced in recent history, the former Senate President said this cannot be allowed to become just another headline that would fade by next week.
Calling for national action, Saraki demanded national mourning and a period of soul-searching by leaders to seek means to nip such menace in the bud.
He added, “My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families, those fighting for survival, and the government and people of Niger State.”
