HURIWA urges Buhari to sack and imprison Lai Mohammed for Lekki denial

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria or HURIWA has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to fire and imprison Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed for rejecting the findings of the Lagos State judicial panel of inquiry into the Lekki Tollgate atrocity.

HURIWA said in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, that the demand was made in response to the panel’s findings and judgement, which stated that there was indeed a massacre that resulted in the deaths of dozens of protestors.

The Nigerian army and police were accused of participation in the killing of demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in 2020, according to HURIWA.

Previously, the concerned minister said at a news conference in Abuja that there was no proof that any protester was slain on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki Tollgate.

The organisation urged the president to order Mohammed’s arrest and prosecution for committing a cruel crime akin to Adolf Hitler’s denial of the Holocaust of six million Jewish people, punishable by almost half a century in prison.

The rights organisation praised the members and chairwoman of the panel of inquiry into the #EndSARS report for their bravery and encouraged the president not to sweep the security services’ criminality under the rug.
