Nigeria’s leader, Bola Tinubu has further given a fresh insight on why he removed subsidy on the day of his inauguration as the president of the country on May 29, 2023.
Speaking at a special Iftar organised for the celebration of his 73rd birthday, the president said he announced the removal of fuel subsidy after thinking of something not originally in his speech.
The president said he assumed office at a time when Nigeria’s economy was daunting and unstable.
He noted that he was left with no option but to make an immediate and difficult decision on the spot.
He said, “On the day of my inauguration, I had to decide on something not originally in my speech, and that was the fuel subsidy removal.”
Also stating that the country was at a point of no return on the issue of subsidy, the president said he had to take the bull by the horn on that.
“The hallmark of a great leader is the ability to make the right decision at the right time. That was the day I declared that the subsidy was gone.
“The following day, I was hounded and thoroughly abused in the media. But I stood firm, knowing it was the right thing to do for our nation’s future,” Tinubu added.
