Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed his sadness with the killings recorded on Sunday in Orlu Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, Nigeria’s South-east.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that there were two contrasting narratives about the killings. While some say the killings were perpetrated by some gunmen, others accuse the Nigerian military of targeting civilians in retaliatory attacks on the gunmen. The second narrative led to the hashtag #OrluIsBleeding which trended on Twitter on Monday and early Tuesday.
The gunmen are believed to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militant wing of the outlawed IPOB.
Reacting, the Nigerian Army said its troops from the 34 Artillery Brigade killed a member of IPOB during the attack in the area.
Commenting on the crisis, Ejiofor demanded for investigation.
He said via his official social media pages on Tuesday night: “Harvest of death in Imo state, it must not go uninvestigated. It is a crime against humanity ! My heart bleeds!
“I strongly condemn in unmistakable terms the genocidal massacre of innocent civilians. It was indeed a black Easter Sunday! May ChukwuOkike Abiama take charge!”
